As a breeding facility, Pollyrich Farms was contending with a mountain of manure which then became a very large hauling and disposal bill when local regulators threatened legal action.  Rick O. installed a two-bay aerated compost system with a third non-aerated bay that he uses to receive the manure and spent wood pellet bedding.  Because the central California coast is dry much of the year, Rick transfers the stockpiled manure into a bay at one time and waters it down as he does this to ensure that he has proper initial moisture content.  He sells his compost to local landscapers and, with the profits, he estimates that his return on investment was about two years.
