Prison Composting Systems
Prisons represent the ultimate in "closed communities" and as such they represent special challenges with regard to waste management. Many of these facilities compost food waste along with landscape waste that is generated within the prison grounds as well as from the surrounding community. In some instances, the prison compost systems also process biosolids from the local wastewater treatment plant, thereby providing a service to the community.
O2Compost has helped install compost systems at several prisons across the United States. In addition to helping the Department of Corrections to reduce their cost of refuse disposal, on-site prison composting provides an ideal opportunity for inmate training. In fact, several inmates from a prison in Washington State had composting jobs waiting for them upon their release.
