With an O2Compost Benchmark system, Steve R. found an opportunity to improve manure handling, create a useful product, and prepare for new Vermont regulations regarding agricultural runoff. "The system has worked great during the long/cold Vermont winter. The manure waste freezes quickly when starting a new bin but once the waste is about 3 feet deep in the bin, it begins to warm gradually and the bin heats up to customary temperatures once the blower use begins. We pick our paddock daily in the winter, so lots of snow and some waste hay is added to the bins in addition to the usual stall waste - as the snow melts, it seems to help keep the material moist in the dry winter air." To facilitate the composting process, Steve switched his bedding material from shavings to pellets. He also built a fourth bin to provide sufficient storage during the winter months.
