Burke Rehabilitation Center is a campus environment consisting of numerous buildings on 40 acres in White Plains, New York. Between all of the buildings, the common areas are beautifully landscaped with garden beds and vast lawns. In an effort to be more sustainable and reduce operating costs, the head of facility maintenance (Tom Mitchell) worked with O2Compost to develop a pilot project to compost yard debris and a small volume of food waste. The project also processed large volumes of autumn leaves and the resulting compost was fully tested to determine its value as a soil amendment. Simple field tests and growth trials also confirmed the value of the compost, which is now being used in all of the garden beds and as top-dressing for their lawn areas.
