Although Laureen L.'s geldings and mares primarily live outside year round, manure management is really needed in the spring when the mares and foals are stalled overnight for up to three months. After a little trial and error with the material mixture and moisture content, Laureen's piles are maintaining temps of 100+ degrees even with overnight temps of 15. She hopes to eventually expand the the system to also accommodate grass and plant clippings. The finished compost will be used around the trees and shrubs around the yard because it will help reduce weeds and improve moisture retention.
