Keep Mobile Beautiful #1
Mobile, AL
This O2Compost Micro-Bin System is located at the Mobile Police Dept Mounted Unit Barn. It was acquired through a Keep America Beautiful grant as a test case to determine how much compostable material can be kept out of the landfill. This system composts stall sawdust and horse manure. The finished compost is delivered to community gardens that are managed by Mobile Urban Growers who help set up and assist with seeds and maintenance for about 15 gardens. Several of these gardens are located at churches and schools and contribute to their food pantries. Having access to this compost (at no charge) is very important for soil amendment as well as keeping the material out of the landfill. Custom features: a cover that is held on with bungee cords and a custom mount for the blower to keep it off the ground. Kris E. says the results have been good and they are now preparing a grant proposal to fund a larger aerated compost system for the horse barn. They have also recommended adding composting to the City and County recycling locations. "Our composting project proves that thousands of pounds of brown and green waste can be recycled into soil amendment and not fill up the landfills."
